Arne Slot Maintains He Is Safe and Has Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Eindhoven Defeat
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was natural for doubts to be raised about his future following a further heavy defeat versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their 9th loss in twelve games, representing the club's poorest streak after being relegated in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league champions on a tough night at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, things are alright, I've received a lot of support from the top,” Slot remarked.
“It would be nice to reverse this trend and secure a win obviously but when you're working as a coach and not doing well then it's expected that questions are asked.”
He added, “I'm comfortable with my position. It is not the initial instance I've found myself in a difficult position but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Conversations with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to expand on his discussions with the club's leadership, the head coach said:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive to the team and to me and we discuss these matters but they don’t call me constantly of the day to say they back me.”
He added, “Through standard exchanges I perceive the belief. However I've not talked to them after this game yet so let’s see.”
Familiar Failings and Player Reaction
Slot highlighted known weaknesses from his Liverpool side in their European defeat, namely missed opportunities and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was blunter in his evaluation of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I don’t. I’m saying that to all,” the midfielder remarked.
“It is not good enough. I don't have to wait to consider it. I'm beyond feeling anger inside. I've reached the stage currently where I simply lack the phrases.”
He added, “It’s hard because I play for the club I love. I support them, and I've watched this club all my life.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a spell of this nature with outcomes so bad.”
Jones finished, “But we continue to wear the emblem on our chest. And until that badge is gone, we’re always going to compete.”
“We’re going to try to help the side return to its rightful place, prove again what this club is about and the reason it's called the best team in the planet.”
“But right now, things are bad and it needs to change.”
