Three police officers lost their lives and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house near the Verona region to execute an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were arrested at the site and another man who ran away subsequent to the explosion was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the location revealed the building left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the property was facing an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander the police commander told the media.

A propane tank had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our members,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.

According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor thought the blast had taken place on a floor above the doorway and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he said officers had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents stated to local news, noting that the three had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
