Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is exiting the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became public.

Summers stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have contributed, optimistic about the prospects of the enterprise, and look forward tracking their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

Digital Correspondence

The freshly disclosed emails showed that the official exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 detention for alleged trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the AI firm expressed it accepted his decision to resign.

"We value his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," OpenAI remarked.

Legislative Background

This news comes after the entire Congress of Congress voted on recently to pass a measure that would compel the Department of Justice to release its documents on Epstein.

The bill will afterward proceed to the administration of US President Donald Trump for signature. He has stated he intends to sign the bill, after modifying his stance on the issue following pushback from his supporters.

A collection of financier-linked correspondence released by the Congressional committee last week referenced numerous prominent individuals in the financier's previous network, without indicating any criminal activity by those individuals.

The messages revealed that the professor and the financier often met for meals, with he often trying to link the official to prominent global figures.

After the emails were made available with the general audience, Summers said he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to persist in communicating with the financier".

He continued that he wanted "to restore confidence and repair connections with the individuals nearest to me".

Professional History

The professor occupied leadership roles under party leaders; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as director of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He presided over the institution from 2001 to 2006 and remains a professor there. When stating his step-down from public roles previously on this week, he indicated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following his declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, confirmed that the economist was not associated with the group.

He joined the board of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a defeated move to oust its CEO Sam Altman.
