Heat and Trail Blazers Earn Initial Victories After Player Arrests

NBA game action

The Miami Heat scored 86 opening half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies

Miami Heat claimed a overwhelming 146 to 114 win over the Grizzlies in their initial basketball game since player Terry Rozier was arrested for suspected illegal gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested in connection with a extensive FBI investigation into sports betting. The two individuals contest the allegations.

But, the Heat were focused as they scored eighty-six first-half points to lead the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.

Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four scores and later said Terry had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is very dear to everyone. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through the situation."

The Trail Blazers also secured their first game since the arrests, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the squad to a convincing 139 to 119 win over the Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Billups and how he coached," Tiago remarked. "We're thinking of him and his family but our focus is on the game."

League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests

Speaking about the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.

"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."

Silver further mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.

"We investigated the matter and were very transparent about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.

"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. Naturally, what they revealed yesterday was an charge.

"And 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in justice to Terry.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
