“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he stated.

He voiced sympathy for his ex-peers in the police, explaining that they are “damned if they do and damned if they don’t”. “They are under pressure because there is such intense speculation from the far right on social media after every major incident about the background of suspects.”

Response from Officials

A Conservative MP, whose constituency includes Huntingdon, described it “sad” but essential for police to quickly disclose the ethnicities of those arrested.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he remarked, adding that online platforms are leveraged to advance narratives, making it critical for police to provide facts to address rumors.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Before the official disclosure, conservative figures had called for a quicker action. For instance, the shadow home secretary urged for prompt sharing of identity details, while the Reform UK leader stated on X that the people needed to know “without delay”.

Moreover, extremist profiles online sought to manipulate the incident. One account named “British Patriot”—with nearly 5,000 followers—shared an baseless allegation that a individual with a blade had been yelling a religious phrase.
