Scream Original Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a major gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a character you portrayed in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallen Favorites
Reports have confirmed that a trio of distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, despite dying in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a small appearance is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the public's reaction. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he got the offer from the original writer.
"I recall the phone call. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling very nervous.
"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular series.
"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While countless dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a strange communal scenario. The possibility of a self-referential story, inspired by classic genre films, also is on the table.
Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
