The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
