The McCann family Parent Calls for Stricter Press Oversight Amid Recollections of Press "Hounding".

Gerry McCann, father to Madeleine McCann has demanded greater scrutiny of the UK media, recounting how being "monstered" by the press made him feel like he was being "drowning under the pressure".

The McCanns Subjected to Press "Abuses"

Gerry McCann stated that his family was tormented by press "intrusions" and that the media had "consistently hampered" the investigation into his daughter's disappearance in 2007.

He noted that the media attention exacted a "heavy burden" on his family. "We had sustained interest and misleading headlines for many months that forced us to take legal action to stop it," he explained.

"We are lucky. We survived. We had strong support. Yet, I must tell you, there were times where I felt like I was drowning, and it was the media, mostly, not the situation we were in," he reflected.

A Call to Revive Press Regulation Review

The McCanns are among more than 30 people who have signed a letter calling on the government to reopen the second phase of the Leveson inquiry, which was due to examine the links between the media and the police.

McCann said it was unacceptable that after more than a year, press regulation was "no longer a priority". He described how his family had been victims of "monstering" by sections of the media and that the press was "camped" outside his home for months after the disappearance.

Recounting the Intrusion

Recalling the harassment, he said: "Journalists coming to the house, photographers literally ramming their cameras against our car window, when we had young twin children in the back who were scared, and how distressing that is for you as a parent."

"It's the misleading narratives. It's the fabrication of stories to drive a headline, rather than reality, which ruins lives," he emphasized.

A Demand for Tougher Regulation and Redress

He stated these actions highlighted why there needed to be stricter press regulation. "At night, as we prepared for bed, we'd put on the news, and there'd be splash stories about ourselves and unverified claims," he said.

"That feeling is overwhelming, and you can see how people succumb to it and think they can't get out of it. The impact is devastating, and we need that protection. There must be accountability. And at the minute, for most of these mainstream media, there is little accountability," he argued.

Government Response and Evolving Media Landscape

The Culture Secretary said that a follow-up part of the inquiry had been ruled out and that the media landscape was now profoundly changed.

"We agree that the situation has changed profoundly since the Leveson's second phase was proposed: people now are more likely to get their news from diverse digital platforms, which has created new and different challenges," the minister said.

It was also noted that weighing the needs of those affected with the need for a free press was a "challenging task to get right," but recognized that "steps must be taken in this area".

An Enduring Search for Closure

Madeleine McCann disappeared from a family vacation apartment in 2007 as a three-year-old. It was stated that it was "deeply disturbing" how the press had consistently meddled with the investigation.

"Leaked information which should have been confidential... So if you were the perpetrator, you knew a lot more than you should have done," he said.

Speaking about hope, he said the hope he would find his daughter was "slim but it's not extinguished". "Our wish is to find her alive, but we need to establish the facts and bring whoever's responsible, and others are at risk while that person is free," he concluded.
