The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
