The retail giant Implements Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products

As a notable development, Walmart has begun implementing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This policy officially takes effect as of early November, according to a company memo distributed to employees.

Addressing Scalper Activity

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer purchasing an enormous quantity of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The employee featured in the video received significant criticism for permitting the bulk transaction to proceed.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The new restriction specifies that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes each time they enter. Yet, the language has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what counts as a "box" remains unclear, and whether someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.

Moreover, because the restriction is tied to individual trips, theoretically an eager reseller could return repeatedly—buying five items each time—to gather large quantities over several hours.

The Scalping Phenomenon

For the average collector, this approach might seem excessive, but for scalpers, it's common behavior. In recent years, speculators have greatly contributed to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.

Some resellers aim to sell unopened products at a markup, while others hunt for rare cards that can fetch extraordinary prices. As an example, the Mega Lucario ex card from the latest set has been listed at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.

Upcoming Releases

The new rule aligns with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Early listings already show chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for nearly $1,500, highlighting the ongoing demand and likely reseller attention.

With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will curb mass buying and improve availability for genuine collectors and casual players alike.
