Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Passion So Long As England's Star Leaves His Ego at the Door.
A single omission proved sufficient. Another and it might have appeared spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to understand that securing World Cup glory demands the involvement of the talented midfielder, although it is equally up to the player to adapt to the strategic frameworks and team pecking order essential with the national team now that he is back in the manager's warm embrace.
The manager wants his aggressive mentality, his fire, but it is a matter of using it appropriately. Individual quality matters but the squad know from bitter experience that there is consequences when fame takes over. Still, a message has been sent.
The midfielder had much to ponder after not being selected of the previous squad. He watched England qualify at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers excel as a high-pressing No 10. He heard Tuchel mention valuing the team's dynamism and principles. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, netting important strikes for Real Madrid versus their rivals and the Italian side. He had to be picked; leaving him out again would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.
The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder directed towards intimidating opponents rather than teammates. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to picking a fight with one of the best players in the world. The best outcome is that his period out of the team has shown him that playing for one's country is a valuable, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now offer support for the youngster after proving that he is not afraid to make big calls.
“No issue exists with him, and no concern about his personality,” the German commented. “Bellingham just has that aggression. It takes a certain edge to achieve greatness that he reached. We all need to support him and establish an environment which he can [have] his drive in matches and for the objectives we are working towards as a team.”
The star dominated the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers versus Serbia and Albania. Any other news? Well, how about another talent? Here is another prodigious No 10 requiring love and guidance. He has not played for the national team since March and has struggled to reach his best this year but the boss had to consider the 25-year-old after his performance in Manchester City’s win versus the German side recently.
The issue, however, is how to use the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a good argument to pick another youngster once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the tournament be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the right blend at Euro 2024. He compromised by forcing both stars into the same XI, restricting the captain's influence as a result.
It is hard to see Tuchel doing similar if it harms the team harmony. There is room for one No 10, with speedy wingers on the wings. Clarity helps. He is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who must play central. The coach prefers him close to Kane. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, can you play the left side? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “Phil is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I have this idea about him for a long time. I think it matches his abilities the most.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has obvious passion for the game, then obviously something is not right, be it his role, the environment, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is also so used to representing Man City in a specific system, to have a clear task. Believe he profits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
The manager talked about one star bursting through for tap-ins and Foden scoring goals from outside the box. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for Manchester City at defense. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at using the playmaker as a false 9 against one opponent or Albania. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are other options if Kane be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.
At the same time, it is also a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting Kane to net in a friendly win against the Scots in over a year ago to find the sole instance in many appearances for England when the pair combined for a goal. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the Euros. Their partnership is missing.
“This is where at some point it falls to the duty of the players,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a feeling of the player under scrutiny. He may not be guaranteed to start against the upcoming opponents. The manager wants him onside but he will be observing him closely. Leave self-importance at the door. It will make a powerful squad into an more effective one.
